Yoga’s 5 Limbs of Voting

vote

I know what you’re thinking.  “What the hell does yoga have to do with voting?”  The only good answer is it depends.  If your practice is purely physical, it would have absolutely nothing to do with voting, but if you’re into yoga philosophy, the answer is all together different.

We all see the world from our own point of view, but to understand that we are connected, we gain clarity about what is truly important.   As we practice on and off our mat, we want policies and candidates to practice the 5 Limb’s of voting too:

  • Ahimsa (non-harming):  compassion for all living beings.  This compassion steams from our thoughts, to what goes on our plate, how we function on the planet, and how we engage civilly.

Policy that reflects compassion for all beings domestic and internationally.

  • Sataya (Truthfulness):  Being honest and impeachable with our words and actions.

Politicians who walk the walk, and not just tell us what we want to hear

  • Asteya (Non-stealing):  Not taking things that don’t belong to us, but also not taking advantage of others

Politicians who put in an honest effort to produce what they said they would during the course of their campaign.  Policy that do  esn’t allow people to be take advantage of.

  • Brahmacharya (Moderation):  The right use of energy.  It also means celibacy if married.

No sex scandals

  •   Aparigraha (Non-attachment):  The art of not taking more than is needed.

Policies that ask everyone to be fair, and are fair to everyone domestic and abroad.

We continue to vote for the world we would like to live in, and through yoga we can improve our union, just by casting our ballot.

Namaste
