Honoring The Ultimate Yogi Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

“We must use time creatively. Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be… The nation and the world are in dire need of creative, peaceful extremists. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

There is not enough gratitude in the world that can be given to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr for his dedication and service. He turned his light on and ignited a flame that continues to burn until this day.  He offered us a glimpse into a world that doesn’t judge anyone by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. This extraordinary soul lived his dharma (purpose). The external world could have pushed him back to lead a successful church, but the flame inside called him to serve the greater good of all humans.

As we honor and reflect upon this great life lived, let us reflect upon our own light, and how we can turn it on, and bring love and hope to others. As we enjoy our yoga practice, and open our hearts, how can we transfer this love and openness to serve others?  How can we light the fire within, so that we may bring light into our own world, and into the world around us?

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” We can’t have light without darkness, nor love without hate. It’s the polarities that bring meaning to our highest values. Like Leonard Cohen sings in his hit song Anthem, “there is a crack in everything. It’s how the light gets in.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

May we take what we learn from our mats into the world.
